The Finnish summer is short, only about three months, but it is celebrated with all the more zest. The amount of events from large-scale music festivals to local markets and fairs is simply astounding, and the white nights make sure revellers never run out of steam.

At some point of the summer, escaping to the countryside is a must for every Finn. Ideally staying at a cottage by water, time there is mostly spent doing nothing save for barbecueing, the occasional dip in the lake and just general hanging about.

With round-the-clock sunlight, cottage life is the best way to recharge your batteries and forget about everyday worries like schedules and appointments.

Simply being is a weirdly wonderful feeling. The spring is an amazing time in Finland, especially in Lapland, the northernmost province, where Finns flock for ski breaks from February to May.

The springtime sun and ideal outdoor conditions are perfect for combining fun and exercise, and resorts everywhere are crowded with smiling, easy-going people.

It is said Finns are born with skis strapped to their feet, but they can certainly party with them on, too.

Finns see themselves as reserved, but calm would be a more fitting description in most cases. As fast speed is in our heritage, Finland boasts several driving academies, where travelers can test their own skills on the icy roads.

In Finland, nature is never far away and Finns definitely have a close connection with it. Getting away from civilization is greatly valued and walking in the woods is a simple, yet terrific way for collecting your thoughts and hearing yourself think every once in a while.

Finland is a country of extremes and contrasts — for example, cold and dark winters alternate with warm and light-filled summers.

For some reason, Finns need to accentuate this by swimming in icy waters while bathing in steaming saunas. Come to think of it, the rather challenging conditions must have played a part in making Finns wanting to test their limits so vigorously.

There are many reasons to fall in love with Finland and the Finns. In fact, it would be impossible to list them all.

So, we decided to just make a random list of some interesting and fun facts, hope you enjoy it! Finnish design isn't just something you see -- it's something you experience.

It is a way of living like nowhere else. If the Finnish archipelago and long Baltic coast make you think about beautiful summer days filled with sailing and boating, you are definitely on the right track.

But the Finnish coast invites you for many great experiences throughout the year. Ice-fishing is a much-loved winter activity in Finland.

THE FINNS - LIVE

Finns -

Mike, thanks for your help, Josh and Taylor. The Finns were amazing! From the pre-wedding communication with Jordan, to me bugging them with other requests in the last minutes before the wedding, to the music!

So many people told us how great the band was And such nice guys, cute too! Could not have been happier with them! Just wish the party could have lasted longer!

The Finns were amazing!! I made sure to leave a review on The Knot for both parties as it was absolutely amazing.

Thank you for helping us out, we really appreciate it! Have a great Thanksgiving! Best, Ashley Balsamo. Not only did they bring the house down but they were extremely professional.

Will definitely pass along the good feedback to anyone whos looking for a band. Thanks, Chris. We believe that the clients and their guests thoroughly enjoyed themselves and your band!

Thank you for all you did to help put on such an amazing event for our clients! We look forward to working with you all again in the future.

Best, Elizabeth. Sorry its taken me so long to respond! But the Finns were great! Super nice and great music : I forget his name..

Our first dance song that they learned for us was perfect as well! We honestly couldnt have been happier with them! I cannot thank you enough!

The Finns were an absolute perfect fit for our celebration! We had so many comments about how wonderful they were! I have several videos including my grandson who is now their biggest fan enjoying the music.

He's 3. I promise to go get my reviews in. Again - your team and the Finns made the day fabulous! Leigh Hewartson. The Finns were amazing!!!!

They were better than anything we could have imagined. We danced all night long, they played all the best songs, were so easy to work with and professional.

They made our wedding an amazing party that we will never forget, all of our guests commented on how great they were.

Even the songs they played during their breaks were amazing, no one stopped dancing until the very last song. I love them so much! I did leave the Finn's feedback on wedding wire.

Thank you!! Bryce and Ehsan p. I'd love to make myself a playlist so I can relive the wedding over and over. It started with background music at the cocktail party and continued thru out the evening.

Their selection of songs were perfect to get the entire crowd going. It was a great balance for all ages to enjoy. Thank you for making the music a success.

Regards, Lew. We definitely enjoyed the music that was played. The guys were all very friendly, helpful and easygoing and we would definitely recommend them!

Thank you! I think they fit the vibe of the event very well, they were extremly professional and friendly and sounded amazing as a group.

I would consider it a successful evening and received a lot of compliments from the guests on the band!

One of my favorite bands we have booked from Sam Hill. I will be in touch for our next event!

Thank you, Josh Zontek. The Finns were fabulous, they were so nice, communicative and did a great job as well!

The client seemed more than thrilled with them as well!!!! The Finns learned our song, Beyond, by Leon Bridges and it was spectacular.

We were so pleasantly surprised when we found out they were going to play it for us. We had so many compliments all evening, and since, about how great the band was, they even got my dad up dancing and singing.

We couldn't have been more pleased. I don't think there was anything that could have been better. We were so sad when it ended and they were finished playing, they really helped make our day perfect.

Thank you all so much! We would be happy to write a review on the Knot and Wedding Wire too. It may be a day or two until we get to it, but it'll be there.

Thanks again! Simply put, The Finns exceeded already very high expectations in every way possible.

Truly cannot recommend highly enough: The Finns, for the win! Cheers, Cy Frazier. All night long people were coming up to us asking who the band was and telling us they were amazing.

I spoke with the band on email because we live in the UK so phoning would be difficult and expensive. He was very responsive and we even sorted out having me and my dad play Wagon Wheel with the band.

Thanks again, Joe. All of my guests had a great time, the music was fun, and the band was very easy to work with. I will certainly write a review on their behalf on The Knot.

I will be sure to recommend Sam Hill Entertainment to my friends and family. Best, Alex Davis. Great music and energy.

Would totally recommend to any and all of our friends and family members. Thanks for everything! Everyone was on the dance floor having a great time.

We had an array of age groups as well. Many guests are still commenting on how much they enjoyed the band. I'm hoping we can see them play again some day or even host them at another event.

I'd be happy to be a reference for them as well. After we all catch up at work, we will get back with you guys. Thanks so much for helping to make Oct 13 such a fun and memorable occasion!

We just recently got back from our honeymoon. It is hard to put into words how incredibly pleased we were with the Finns.

Communicating with the band was quick and simple, and we never encountered any issues along the way. They turned our reception into an unforgettable experience for not just us, but for all of our family and friends.

Everyone continues to comment on how they have never seen a dance floor SO full of people for SO long.

The song selection and sound quality were unparalleled. We've attended a lot of weddings, and we have never been more impressed with the overall performance of the band, and I think our guests would agree.

We are almost positive that we will see The Finns playing again at one of our friend's weddings!

We also requested that the band learn one of our favorite songs, which they had never played before, and they mastered it! The crowd also insisted that the band play an encore song at the end of the night, and it was a perfect finale.

I could go on and on about how amazing the entire experience truly was for all of us. We are so thrilled to cherish the memories we have of The Finns playing at our reception.

We will definitely leave feedback wherever we can. More than anything we could have ever expected! I think that the venue has their contact info so that they can recommend them in the future.

The band was so responsive in the weeks leading up and dealt directly with the wedding coordinator which was so helpful to me.

Abby and Matt. The Finns were absolutely amazing. They were so accommodating and engaging with everyone even letting one of the groomsman sing a couple of songs with them and also allowing the bride and maid of honor to sing a song karaoke style.

Working and planning with them in the weeks prior to the wedding was so easy and they consistently honored our requests.

They sounded even better than what we heard on the website. Also thanks to Sam Hill Entertainment for great customer service in helping chose this band and guiding us through the planning process.

We will highly recommend your services. Thanks for everything, Teresa. We had a truly fabulous experience with The Finns.

We got tons of compliments from our guests on the wide variety of music they played, and the dance floor was full the whole evening.

It meant a lot that they all were willing to work with my Aunt Annie to allow her to sing a special song as they played along.

I think our absolute favorite moment aside from the first dance was when they played "Wagon Wheel" to close out the evening, it really was the icing on the cake of an amazing night.

Thank you for all of your help throughout this process, and pass along our appreciation to the band as well. Best, Addy.

Their stage presence, talent and showmanship set the stage for an exceptional night of dancing and fun. The music they choose had everyone on their feet all night long ALL ages.

Mark's interaction with the wedding party and guests personalized the whole evening. Our guests continue to rave about how good the band was!

We would recommend The Finns to anyone without hesitation and should our youngest daughter decide to wed, rest assured, we will reach out to The Finns again.

Thanks for a terrific evening! Ellen and Chris Thomsen. I can't send enough praise your way for the fabulous job you all did that evening.

Our guests raved and raved about you - the evening of and at the breakfast we hosted on Sunday morning!!! You all can play absolutely everything and appeal to everybody-young and old alike.

Thank you for being an important part for our daughter's wedding and being such a super band!!!! Sincerely, Carroll and Gayle Foley.

My Mother told me she wishes should could have another event just to hire them again. They were very polite and professional communicating before the wedding.

The day of the wedding they played all the songs I had requested and were very talented. I think our guest had a blast.

Thank you for all of your help. Everything was fantastic! The band was amazing and garnered SO many compliments from all of our guests!

We had both a higher rate of show and a longer average attendance time and it was clear that folks were staying for the band!

Thank you so much! Helen P Thomas. Working with the band was really easy, they always got back to us in a timely manner. I tend to ask a lot of questions, and they always had answers.

The day of everything flowed really well. They were great at keeping with the timeline they had provided.

We were so pleased with how well they performed. We've gotten multiple compliments from guest on how great the band was.

There style of music went perfectly with what we had envisioned. And they did a really great job with learning a song for our first dance.

Thank you for everything! Finns see themselves as reserved, but calm would be a more fitting description in most cases.

The beauty of it lies in its simplicity - a session of ice-fishing could almost be counted as a sort of meditation. Finns are passionate about their food and fiercely loyal to their culinary roots.

But it is not known how, why, and when this occurred. Petri Kallio has suggested that the name Suomi may bear even earlier Indo-European echoes with the original meaning of either "land" or "human".

The first known mention of Finns is in the Old English poem Widsith which was compiled in the 10th century, though its contents is probably older.

Among the first written sources possibly designating western Finland as the land of Finns are also two rune stones.

One of these is in Söderby, Sweden, with the inscription finlont U , and the other is in Gotland , a Swedish island in the Baltic Sea , with the inscription finlandi G M dating from the 11th century.

With regard to the ancestry of the Finnish people, the modern view emphasizes the overall continuity in Finland's archeological finds [52] and earlier more obvious linguistic surroundings.

Archeological data suggest the spreading of at least cultural influences from many sources ranging from the south-east to the south-west following gradual developments rather than clear-cut migrations.

Just as uncertain are the possible mediators and the timelines for the development of the Uralic majority language of the Finns.

On the basis of comparative linguistics, it has been suggested that the separation of the Finnic and the Sami languages took place during the 2nd millennium BC, and that the Proto-Uralic roots of the entire language group date from about the 6th to the 8th millennium BC.

When the Uralic languages were first spoken in the area of contemporary Finland is debated. Therefore, Finnish was already a separate language when arriving in Finland.

Furthermore, the traditional Finnish lexicon has a large number of words about one-third without a known etymology, hinting at the existence of a disappeared Paleo-European language; these include toponyms such as niemi "peninsula".

For example, the origins of such cultural icons as the sauna , the kantele an instrument of the zither family , and the Kalevala national epic have remained rather obscure.

Agriculture supplemented by fishing and hunting has been the traditional livelihood among Finns. Slash-and-burn agriculture was practiced in the forest-covered east by Eastern Finns up to the 19th century.

Agriculture, along with the language, distinguishes Finns from the Sami , who retained the hunter-gatherer lifestyle longer and moved to coastal fishing and reindeer herding.

Christianity spread to Finland from the Medieval times onward and original native traditions of Finnish paganism have become extinct.

Finnish paganism combined various layers of Finnic, Norse, Germanic and Baltic paganism. Finnic Jumala was some sort of sky-god and is shared with Estonia.

Belief of a thunder-god, Ukko or Perkele , may have Baltic origins. Local animistic deities, "haltia", which resemble Scandinavian tomte , were also given offerings to, and bear worship was also known.

Christianity was introduced to Finns and Karelians from the east, in the form of Eastern Orthodoxy from the Medieval times onwards.

However, Swedish kings conquered western parts of Finland in the late 13th century, imposing Roman Catholicism. Reformation in Sweden had the important effect that bishop Mikael Agricola , a student of Martin Luther , introduced written Finnish, and literacy became common during the 18th century.

When Finland became independent, it was overwhelmingly Lutheran Protestant. A small number of Eastern Orthodox Finns were also included, thus the Finnish government recognized both religions as "national religions".

In Whereas, in Russian Ingria, there were both Lutheran and Orthodox Finns; the former were identified as Ingrian Finns while the latter were considered Izhorans or Karelians.

Baltic Finns are traditionally assumed to originate from two different populations speaking different dialects of Proto-Finnic kantasuomi.

Thus, a division into West Finnish and East Finnish is made. Further, there are subgroups, traditionally called heimo , [53] [54] according to dialects and local culture.

Although ostensibly based on late Iron Age settlement patterns, the heimos have been constructed according to dialect during the rise of nationalism in the 19th century.

The historical provinces of Finland can be seen to approximate some of these divisions. The regions of Finland , another remnant of a past governing system, can be seen to reflect a further manifestation of a local identity.

Today's urbanized Finns are not usually aware of the concept of 'heimo' nor do they typically identify with one except maybe Southern Ostrobothnians , although the use of dialects has experienced a recent revival.

Urbanized Finns do not necessarily know a particular dialect and tend to use standard Finnish or city slang but they may switch to a dialect when visiting their native area.

For the paternal and maternal genetic lineages of Finnish people and other peoples, see, e. Haplogroup U5 is estimated to be the oldest major mtDNA haplogroup in Europe and is found in the whole of Europe at a low frequency, but seems to be found in significantly higher levels among Finns, Estonians and the Sami people.

Variation within Finns is, according to fixation index F ST values, greater than anywhere else in Europe. The F ST values given here are actual values multiplied by 10, Males carrying the marker apparently moved northwards as the climate warmed in the Holocene , migrating in a counter-clockwise path through modern China and Mongolia , to eventually become concentrated in areas as far away as Fennoscandia and the Baltic.

N has been found in many samples of Neolithic human remains exhumed from northeastern China and the circum-Baikal area of southern Siberia.

It is thus suggested that the ancestors of the Uralic-peoples and of the Turkic-Yakut peoples may have originated in this region about years ago.

Until the s, most linguists believed that Finns arrived in Finland as late as the first century AD.

However, accumulating archaeological data suggests that the area of contemporary Finland had been inhabited continuously since the end of the ice age , contrary to the earlier idea that the area had experienced long uninhabited intervals.

The hunter-gatherer Sami were pushed into the more remote northern regions. A hugely controversial theory is so-called refugia.

This was proposed in the s by Kalevi Wiik , a professor emeritus of phonetics at the University of Turku.

According to this theory, Finno-Ugric speakers spread north as the Ice age ended. They populated central and northern Europe, while Basque speakers populated western Europe.

As agriculture spread from the southeast into Europe, the Indo-European languages spread among the hunter-gatherers. In this process, both the hunter-gatherers speaking Finno-Ugric and those speaking Basque learned how to cultivate land and became Indo-Europeanized.

The linguistic ancestors of modern Finns did not switch their language due to their isolated location. Wiik has not presented his theories in peer-reviewed scientific publications.

Many scholars in Finno-Ugrian studies have strongly criticized the theory. Professor Raimo Anttila, Petri Kallio and brothers Ante and Aslak Aikio have renounced Wiik's theory with strong words, hinting strongly to pseudoscience and even at right-wing political biases among Wiik's supporters.

The most heated debate took place in the Finnish journal Kaltio during autumn Since then, the debate has calmed, each side retaining their positions.
